Both are low-maintenance, both outlast wood, and both cost broadly similar money. The comparison guides that rank for this question tend to stop there — appearance, colour choice, lifespan, recyclability. None of that helps once you are standing in the yard deciding.
What actually separates them is site conditions. Here is how we choose between them.
Privacy is the first fork, and it is decisive
Vinyl privacy panels are solid. Aluminium is a picket system — there are always gaps between the pickets, and no aluminium fence gives you visual privacy.
If you want to screen a neighbour, a road, or a pool deck from view, that ends the comparison. If you want containment and definition without losing the view, aluminium keeps the yard feeling larger and does not wall off a sight line.

Sloped ground: racking versus stepping
This is the single biggest practical difference and almost nobody writes about it.
Aluminium panels rack. The pickets pivot slightly at the rails, so a panel can follow a grade as a parallelogram while the pickets stay vertical. On rolling ground that means a fence line that hugs the slope with no gaps underneath.
Most vinyl privacy panels do not rack meaningfully. They have to be stepped — each panel set level, with a vertical offset between panels. That leaves triangular gaps at the low edge of every step. On a gentle grade nobody notices. On the kind of rolling ground common across parts of York County, stepping a long privacy run produces a staircase, and a visible gap under each panel.
There are ways to manage it — raking the bottom rail, custom-cut panels, filling with landscape material — and we cover the approaches in our notes on fencing sloped yards. But if the ground moves a lot and you are undecided on material, aluminium handles it more gracefully and more cheaply.
Around a pool, the code decides
Pennsylvania’s adopted pool code sets a maximum opening the barrier must not allow a 4-inch sphere through, and tightens vertical spacing to 1¾ inches where horizontal rails sit less than 45 inches apart.
Standard aluminium pool panels are built to satisfy that. Privacy vinyl can be made to comply, but the rail configuration matters and it is not automatic. It is why most pool enclosures we install are aluminium — see permit and zoning rules for how the approvals fit together.
Wind
A solid vinyl privacy fence is a sail. Six feet of unbroken panel catches wind that an aluminium picket fence lets straight through. That translates into post spacing, post depth and footing size — a properly engineered vinyl privacy fence needs more substantial posts than the same run in aluminium, and skimping there is why you see leaning vinyl fences after a storm.
On an exposed lot with a long open run, this is a real cost difference, not a technicality.
Cold, and what breaks
Vinyl stiffens as temperature drops. Quality PVC with good impact modifiers handles Central Pennsylvania winters without trouble, but the failure mode is a crack rather than a dent — a hit from a mower, a ladder or a snow shovel in January is more likely to break a vinyl panel than in July.
Aluminium dents and bends rather than cracking, and the powder coat can chip. Neither is fragile. They simply fail differently, and that changes what a repair looks like.
Repairing a damaged section
Aluminium is generally the easier fix: pickets and rails are individual components, and a bent picket can often be swapped without dismantling the run.
Vinyl is panel-based. Damage usually means replacing a whole panel, which brings up colour matching — white vinyl weathers, and a new panel beside a ten-year-old one shows. Worth thinking about if the fence runs somewhere it will get hit: alongside a driveway, or where a plough throws snow.

- Privacy needed — vinyl, no contest
- Rolling or sloped ground — aluminium, unless privacy overrides it
- Pool enclosure — aluminium in most cases
- Exposed, windy lot — aluminium, or vinyl with upgraded posts
- Pets and containment with an open outlook — aluminium, with picket spacing chosen for the animal
- Screening a road or a neighbour — vinyl
- Somewhere it will get knocked — aluminium repairs more cleanly
On cost, the two overlap enough that price rarely decides it. Site conditions usually do.
